Description
Rare & entertaining 1880 Political Cartoon Map of the British Isles, most probably the work of Liberal activist & pamphleteer, Alfred Farthing Robbins [1856-1931], who is known to have used the pen-name "Nemesis", with which this map is cryptically signed. Published by London map sellers, G W Bacon & Co, just prior to the April 1880 Election, it contrasts sharply with Fred W Rose's ardently pro-Conservative cartoon map of the exact same period. By contrast, "Nemesis" offers the opposing Liberal point of view and presents a damning critique of the past five years of Conservative government. In Scotland the former leader of the Liberal Party, William Gladstone stands imperious, the epitome of honest statesmanhip, in contrast to the increasingly rocky & unstable position of the incumbent Conservative Premier, Benjamin Disraeli, the King Jingo of the map's title. He is shown in the attire of a Peer of the realm, having recently been elevated to the House of Lords as Lord Beaconsfield. A few weeks later British voters would wholeheartedly endorse the "Nemesis" viewpoint with a landslide Liberal victory and secured for Gladstone a second term in office as British Prime Minister, 1880-1885.
